Questions
- How accurate is a CEFR estimate from a formula?
- Not very, and we would rather say so. Readability formulas classify CEFR exactly only about a quarter of the time, and miss by more than a full level in another quarter. Treat it as a starting point, not a verdict.
- Then why show it at all?
- Because it is the vocabulary teachers plan in. The measured Flesch-Kincaid grade is shown next to it, and that number is exact — Flesch-Kincaid is a grade level by definition.
- What is a better way to judge level?
- Readability plus your own read of the vocabulary and topic. The highlights here show which specific words and sentences push the score up, which is usually more useful than the label.
